Food lovers from across Windsor will be gathering in early May to settle the question, “who makes Windsor’s best bread?”

The first ever Bread and Roses Festival will be held at Lanspeary Park on May 1st between 5pm and 7pm to decide who makes the best bread and pastries locally.

Organizers say some of the city’s best-known local bakeries will be handing out free samples of their work to the public, who will have an opportunity to cast a vote for their favourites in categories including bread, artisinal bread, flatbread, pastries, cookies and pies.

“There will be something for everyone,” says organizer Melisa LaRue. “We have face painting for the kids provided by local tattoo artists, and of course baked goods from some of the best bakeries in Windsor will be given out completely free of charge.”

LaRue said you’ll be able to wash down the delicious treats with fresh, locally-roasted gourmet coffee.

Organizers say the event was chosen by the Windsor May Day Committee and the Windsor Workers’ Education Centre to highlight Windsor and Essex County’s rich and fertile agricultural sector with a delicious taste of what Windsor’s best bakeries are able to make with the harvest.

Spots are still available for restaurants and bakeries that would like to participate. Those interested in entering the competition are asked to contact Andrew Nellis at 519-944-8096 or by email at [email protected].
