It seems the new Spitfires have adjusted quite nicely in Windsor. Thursday and Friday nights, Brody Milne made his presence known. Saturday night, the glory belonged to Sam Povorozniouk. He scored the game-winner with 12 seconds to play in regulation to break a tie and send the Spits home happy. Windsor won 2-1 over the Kitchener Rangers.

With their third game in three nights, the exhaustion was beginning to settle in for the Spitfires. They were a little slow in the early stages of the game. As the players revved up their engines, they found some energy in the second half of the first period. Brady Vail skated down the right boards into the offensive zone. His low wrist-shot beat former Spitfire goalie Jordan DeKort as Windsor took a 1-0 lead.

The goal sent thousands of teddy bears into the air and onto the ice.

The score remained the same heading into the intermission.

Though the second period was scoreless, both squads had handfuls of chances. Each goaltender (Alex Fotinos for Windsor, Jordan DeKort for Kitchener) made great saves to give their respective teams some opportunities.

The two teams battled in the third looking for the game’s next goal. It wasn’t until there was less than five minutes to play in regulation that the goal was scored – Kitchener had tied the game at one. Logan Schmidt fired a shot from the blue line. The puck made its way through traffic in front of Fotinos, but it dropped behind the fallen goaltender. Brent Pedersen slapped it in for the equalizer. Time was running out in the final period. With seconds left, and one last rush, the Spitfires’ newest forward made his mark. Sam Povorozniouk picked up a pass from Ben Johnson at the top of the circle. A few strides later, he beat DeKort with a quick shot the sent excitement throughout the WFCU Centre. The Windsor Spitfires defeated the Kitchener Rangers 2-1.

The Spitfires return on home ice next Thursday, December 12th to take on the Peterborough Petes.
