A section of Huron Line is undergoing a makeover, thanks in part to the future construction of the Windsor Essex Parkway.
Two businesses which have been forced to vacate their current property had to find new locations, and both chose to stay in the same area. This is a perfect example of what the City’s Official Plan calls for, the infilling of current properties in the city, and not expanding outwards.
First is Freds Farm Fresh which has been an icon along Huron Line in South Windsor for 30 years. Freds recently went before site plan control to get approval for their new location, located up the road just past Northwood drive.
The new property is double the size of what Freds has now, and the the retail building will also a little more then 50% bigger then the current Freds. It will feature an expanded greenhouse, that will sell flowers, plans and other landscape materials, that many have come to expect from Fred’s over the years.
The site will also have room for future expansion to allow construction of a restaurant, but at this time there is no plans to locate one on site, and the approval is for the new Freds only building and related parking only.
The site plan is conceptual still, and may be changed. (http://citywindsor.ca/DisplayAttach.asp?AttachID=20082)
Also under construction on the same block, just south of the new Fred’s is the new home of Daytona Carwash. Daytona closed its old location last December, and construction of the new has been under way since the summer.
The Daytona site will also have a second building constructed, which can be used for retail or a fast food location.
