The new South West Detention Centre is targeted to be substantially complete by August 2013. Following substantial completion the ministry will begin the process of training staff on the new state-of-art technology and developing operational procedures for the institution.
It is expected that a phased-in approach will be used to move inmates and staff into the new facility beginning in 2014 and lasting for several months. Once all inmates are removed from the Windsor Jail the ministry will begin the decommissioning process, which could take several additional months.
The facility will cost $247 million to build.
