Several huge milestones took place and 2012 was a very successful year according to those responsible for construction of the Herb Gray Parkway.

Accomplishments include: 1.5 million cubic metres of earth was removed during the excavation of 11 tunnels and seven bridge structures — enough to fill 600 Olympic size swimming pool, 50 kilometres of utilities were relocated, 28 kilometres of temporary diversion roads were opened, 60 long-span girders were installed for two permanent bridges and a new multi-lane roundabout was opened in November — the first permanent section of the new Parkway.

Retained Soil System (RSS) Walls were installed which hold up the sides of the tunnels and bridges, began on several structures. Over the duration of construction, a total of 50,000 square metres of RSS walls will be installed, equal to about 33 ice hockey rinks.

The North Talbot Road Bridge was reopened to traffic in August. Pile driving was completed early in 2012 by local company Facca, followed by the construction of the piers and deck. The new structure was widened to accommodate the six-lane Highway 401.

Over the weekend of November 10th, the bridge that carried Highway 3 traffic over Highway 401 was demolished by Priestly Demolition in four hours. Demolition required the closure of Highway 401 westbound and eastbound for 50 hours. Traffic was diverted through the new roundabout.
