Roller derby may be headed to Windsor; here’s your first chance to participate!
If you’re not familiar with the sport, roller derby is a full-contact, grassroots and mostly all-female game played on oldschool quad rollerskates that traces its roots back to the 1930s. Primarily a competitive sport, contemporary roller derby is played all over the US, Canada and the world by various non-profit women’s leagues. Roller derby often includes elements of burlesque and punk aesthetic while keeping safety mindful (helmets and pads) and team names feature great levels of cheerfully sardonic word play.
Windsor Ontario Roller Derby (WORD) –a new Facebook group dedicated to bringing the sport to life here in Windsor– is hosting a meeting this weekend to gauge interest and plan for a local rendition of the sport.
Interested in participating? WORD asks you to meet at the Manchester Pub (546 Ouellette Avenue) this Sunday at 7pm.
From the group:
Roller derby has something for everyone, and without the people behind the skaters there would be no derby! Referees, stat nerds, announcers, jeerleaders, ticket takers, sponsors, other volunteers and FANS FANS FANS are always needed!
