Demolition is underway at a set of six row-houses on Argyle Road in Walkerville after fire ravaged the complex early Saturday morning.
Windsor Fire investigators and officials from the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office are combing through the wreckage to determine the cause of the fire.
The blaze broke out around 5:40am Saturday morning. Chief Fire Prevention Officer John Lee says the fire originated on the first floor at the rear of 1264 Argyle. The resident wasn’t home at the time, but neighbours soon noticed smoke and flames and called 911.
The fire quickly spread to the second floor, and then to a shared attic where it spread to the other five houses.
Neighbours came to the aid of the victims, providing meals and accommodations for those displaced during the blaze.
The fire took more than seven hours to extinguish. Lee says the six houses between 1258 and 1270 Argyle are a total loss and are in the process of being torn down. The homes were built in the 1910’s.
The total damage estimate is pegged at $1.5 to $1.8 million dollars. No one was hurt during the fire.
