The Urban Art Market, located at 548 Chilver Road, opened recently in Walkerville.

The shop, which currently features 27 local artisans, is open 11am-6pm Tuesdays through Sundays. Many of the artists whose items are for sale in the store will be a part of the grand opening weekend.

“We have a great variety and diversity of product on display. For example, pottery, greeting cards, knitwear, to men’s grooming products, stationary, and lots for kids. Everything is made with love, and passion,” said owner Anissa Noakes.

Noakes began to crochet as a hobby and in 2014 was in her first craft show. Her crochet items, under the name Stray Sheep Co., have been sold all over the Windsor area. As Stray Sheep Co. grew in popularity and the demand for custom orders grew, Noakes knew she wanted to expand into her own retail space that she could share with other artists.

“The past few years I have met so many amazing creative people who would love to do their craft as a full time job, but it’s just so hard. They were all in the same position I was in, that they needed a space to showcase their product. I knew many of them mention they would display in a store if I opened one,” said Noakes.

In a matter of weeks the perfect space, location and an abundance of talented local artists came together to help make The Urban Art Market happen. The store is located in Walkerville, with wooden floors, large windows and a comfy couch. Antique furniture, baskets full of merchandise and chalkboard signage add to the charm of the shop. Some of the items found in store include Eastberry natural soaps, modern teething jewellery by Finity Handmade, wool felted dolls by Great Lakes Felts, moccasins by Culture Shock Jewelry, dog toys by Completely Carly, and much more.

“I knew I always wanted to open my own business one day, the question was when and where. The opportunity for this came up, and I had to take the chance,” said Noakes.

The Urban Art Market is located at 548 Chilver Road and is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 11am – 6pm. You can contact them by calling 226-674-3131 or visit their Facebook page for more information.
