Local Artist Brings One Woman Shows To The Walkerville Theatre

Local artist Leslie McCurdy has been touring internationally for 18 years with her critically acclaimed one-woman historic plays, including “The Spirit of Harriet Tubman” and “Things my Fore-Sister Saw”. This summer, she is premiering two brand new shows she’s authored in a summer series at the Walkerville Theatre.

In July, “The Shelton Brooks Darktown Strutters Review and Ball” will have your toes tapping and fingers snapping! The show features Leslie McCurdy and guest Cassel Miles as they celebrate the songs of Amherstburg’s famous composer/musician Shelton Brooks and the early ragtime music he introduced. A live ragtime band will accompany this show while the audience is invited to learn basic ragtime dance steps and join the ball.

It takes place this Thursday July 30th and Friday July 31st at 1pm and 7pm.   Tickets are $35 and for students and seniors $25.  An after party/fundraiser for Emancipation Day Celebrations will follow the Friday evening show.   Tickets for that are $10.

In August the series continues with “Lady Ain’t Singin’ No Blues”, Leslie McCurdy’s tribute to the great Jazz vocalist Billie Holiday. This show celebrates Billie’s artistry, rather than focusing on her tragedy and will celebrate the song styling that helped her get through it all.

It takes place on August 27th and 28th at 1pm and 7:30pm.  Tickets are $25 and for students and seniors $15.
