Hospital And Unions Partner For Patient Safety

A new program is being launched at Windsor Regional Hospital to ensure patient safety.

In partnership with local unions, patients and families are reminded of their right and obligation to ask staff if they performed the 4 moments of hand hygiene and if they checked the armband, check of ID twice to prevent patient harm.

Staff at Windsor Regional Hospital will now display identification that simply state,‘Ask Me!’ Patients and families have the right and obligation to ask any staff member entering the hospital or their room if they are meeting WRH’s safety standards of washing hands and checking to ensure the
correct patient is being administered medication, test or surgical procedure.

The hospital says that over the past five months the hand washing compliance rate at Met Campus has been 97.38% and at Ouellette Campus 82.5% with a corporate average of 89.94%.

During that same period of time Met averaged 5 health care associated infections per week and Ouellette 14 per week.

“All staff including volunteers are asked to observe the 4 moments of hand hygiene” said David Musyj, President and CEO. David stated further “A higher hand washing rate leads to lower infections and vice versa. One or two weeks after hand washing rates drop, infections increase. One infection is too many”.

As a part of this campaign on a weekly basis the % of hand washing compliance by campus and the overall corporate percentage will be advertised at each campus on televisions throughout the building as well as on the electronic billboards outside each campus.
