Delay Doesn’t Slow Spitfires In 4-1 Win

A near hour and a half delay to a game would have most feeling restless. Not the Windsor Spitfires, though. They capitalized on the bounces, made the saves and scored the goals. The Spits pick up a 4-1 victory over the Barrie Colts.

The Colts, travelling south, were caught in a traffic jam following a 96-vehicle pileup on the highway.

Notably, the Spitfires defense was solid Thursday night. They held the Colts back, fought for positioning and blocked shots.

The slow start was to be expected following the temporary postponement of the drop of the puck inside the WFCU Centre. Windsor gave up a couple of penalties, but refocused and composed itself. In doing so, the pace quickened as Remy Giftopoulous put up his team’s first goal. Formidable passing by the Spitfires set up Giftopoulos for a cool little move in close before he scored. Two minutes later, after Brady Vail’s pass bobbled up in the air, Ben Johnson had the wherewithal to bat the puck out of the air and into the net. With twenty minutes down, Windsor was up by two.

The Spitfires upheld the same style of smart hockey in the second period. Despite scoring two more goals (Sam Povorozniouk with a slap-shot from the top of the circle, Ryan Foss with a tricky wrist-shot), the highlight of the period was Dalen Kuchmey. The Colts broke into the Spitfires’ zone with a 3-on-1. Kuchmey was patient and made a tremendous save on the odd-man rush. With big plays like that, the Spitfires took a 4-0 lead to the locker room after two periods.

Down but not out, the Barrie Colts pushed for a goal. Although Windsor was playing near-perfect hockey, the visitors were able to get the puck behind the goalie. Kevin Labanc’s high, top-corner wrist-shot fooled Kuchmey to spoil the goaltender’s shutout. The Spitfires wouldn’t allow another goal and grabbed a 4-1 victory over Barrie.

Windsor’s next home game is Thursday, march 6th at 7:05pm against the Saginaw Spirit.
