Health Unit COVID-19 Cases & Outbreaks Update For Tuesday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 37 new cases of COVID-19 and 1 new death in Windsor and Essex County on Tuesday.
New & Total Cases
The Health Unit says 14 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 11 cases are community acquired, 5 cases are outbreak related, 1 case is travel related, and the acquisition sources of 6 cases are still under investigation.
Total overall cases increased from 19,590 on Monday September 27th to 19,627 on Tuesday September 28th.
They say 288 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex (decrease of 19 since yesterday).
Variants of Concern
The Health Unit says 4,173 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (increase of 5 since yesterday).
Variant case strains:
- 1,834 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha variant (B.1.1.7)
- 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta variant (B.1.351)
- 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma variant (P.1)
- 2,169 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta variant (B.1.617.2) (increase of 5 since yesterday)
- 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa variant (B.1.617.1)
The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain. The numbers listed are not necessarily correlated to today’s new cases due to the delay.
Vaccinations
Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):
- 314,653 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+390 since yesterday)
- 23,396 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-258 since yesterday) *
- 291,257 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+648 since yesterday)
- 3,587 people have received a 3rd dose/booster shot of a vaccine (+192 since yesterday)
- A total of 609,497 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+1,230 since yesterday)
* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses
Vaccination Percentages
- 71.8 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine (increase of 0.1 per cent since yesterday)
- 82.9 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) have received at least one dose of a vaccine (increase of 0.1 per cent since yesterday)
- 66.4 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated (increase of 0.1 per cent since yesterday)
- 76.8 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) are fully vaccinated (increase of 0.2 per cent since yesterday)
Note: The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

The Health Unit lists 18,885 total resolved cases.
That’s an increase of 55 resolved cases since yesterday.
Deaths
The Health Unit announced one additional death from COVID-19 today bringing the local death toll to 454. They say a woman in her 50s from the community passed away.
Hospitalizations
The Health Unit lists 37 hospitalizations today: 29 people in acute care (increase of 22), and 8 people in the ICU (increase of 1) with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
