51 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Windsor Essex On Thursday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 51 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Thursday.

New & Total Cases

The Health Unit says 13 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 9 cases are community acquired, 2 cases are travel related, 1 case is outbreak related, and the acquisition sources of 26 cases are still under investigation.

Total overall cases increased from 17,380 on Wednesday August 18th to 17,431 on Thursday August 19th.

They say 324 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex (increase of 8).

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 2,260 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date.

Variant case strains:

  • 1,834 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
  • 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1)
  • 260 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2)
  • 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 295,420 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+753 since yesterday)
    • 28,755 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-59 since yesterday) *
    • 266,665 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+812 since yesterday)
  • A total of 562,085 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+1,565 since yesterday)

* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses

Vaccination Percentages

  • 67.44 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
    • 77.9 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
  • 60.88 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated
    • 70.3 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) are fully vaccinated

That’s an increase of 43 resolved cases since yesterday.

There have been no additional deaths from COVID-19 today and the local death toll stands at 437.

The Health Unit lists 7 hospitalizations today: 7 people in acute care (increase of 1), and 0 people in the ICU (decrease of 1) with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
