11 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Windsor Essex On Wednesday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 11 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Wednesday.

New & Total Cases

The Health Unit says 3 cases are community acquired, 1 case is a close contact of a confirmed case, and 7 cases are still under investigation.

Total overall cases increased from 16,907 on Tuesday August 3rd to 16,918 on Wednesday August 4th, and 48 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex.

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 2,018 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (increase of 3).

Variant case strains:

  • 1,823 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
  • 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1)
  • 29 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2) (increase of 3)
  • 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain.

They say 10 variants of concern cases are currently active in Windsor-Essex.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 289,013 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+335 since yesterday)
    • 34,219 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-463 since yesterday) *
    • 254,794 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+798 since yesterday)
  • A total of 543,807 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+1,133 since yesterday)

* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses

Vaccination Percentages

  • 65.98 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
    • 76.1 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
  • 58.17 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated
    • 67.1 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) are fully vaccinated

Note: The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

There are three vaccination programs at this time:

    • Walk-in appointments are available at all mass vaccination sites for first doses, pending vaccine availability.

Resolved Cases

The Health Unit lists 16,435 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 3 resolved cases since yesterday.

Deaths

There have been no additional deaths from COVID-19 and the local death toll stands at 435.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 1 hospitalization of a person from Windsor-Essex today: 0 people in acute care, and 1 person in the ICU with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
