2 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Windsor Essex On Wednesday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 2 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Wednesday.

New & Total Cases

The Health Unit says 1 case is community acquired and 1 case is a close contact of a confirmed case.

Total overall cases increased from 16,849 on Tuesday July 20th to 16,851 on Wednesday July 21st, and 16 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex.

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 1,991 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date.

Variant case strains:

  • 1,818 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
  • 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1)
  • 10 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2)
  • 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain.

They say 3 variants of concern cases are currently active in Windsor-Essex.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 283,477 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+546 since yesterday)
    • 48,127 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-2,374 since yesterday) *
    • 235,350 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+2,920 since yesterday)
  • A total of 518,827 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+3,466 since yesterday)

* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses

Vaccination Percentages

  • 64.72 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
    • 76.5 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (adults) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
  • 53.73 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated
    • 64.6 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (adults) are fully vaccinated

Note: The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

The Health Unit lists 16,400 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 1 resolved case since yesterday.

Deaths

There have been no additional deaths from COVID-19 and the local death toll stands at 435.

The Health Unit lists 3 hospitalizations of people from Windsor-Essex today: 0 people in acute care, and 3 people in the ICU with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
