40 New Cases Of COVID-19, 2 New Deaths In Windsor Essex On Tuesday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 40 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Tuesday, bringing the local total to 14,478.

New Cases

Cases increased from 14,438 on Monday April 12th to 14,478 on Tuesday April 13th and 398 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex.

The Health Unit says 2 cases are outbreak-related, 8 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 9 cases are community acquired, and the acquisition sources of 21 cases are still being investigated by the Health Unit’s nursing staff.

The Health Unit says 315 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (an increase of 14 identified since yesterday). Health Unit CEO Theresa Marentette says 114 of the currently active cases are variants of concern.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today:

  • 106,546 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+1,621 since yesterday)
    • 94,068 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (+1,603 since yesterday)
    • 12,478 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+18 since yesterday)
  • A total of 119,024 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+1,639 since yesterday)

How To Get A Vaccine

There are two vaccination programs at this time:

  • Mass Vaccination Clinics (Pfizer or Moderna)
    • Adults aged 50 and older living in “hot spot” postal code regions: N8X, N8Y, N9A, N9B, N9C, N8H, or N9Y
    • Adults aged 60 and older living anywhere in Windsor-Essex
    • Vaccination booking is available at this link: https://wait.crowdhandler.com/wechuvaccination
    • Or you can call 226-773-2200 (but the Health Unit says the call centre is only for assisting people who can’t use the website and the call centre has the same access to appointments as what’s shown on the website)
  • Pharmacy Vaccinations (AstraZeneca)

Resolved Cases

The Health Unit lists 13,671 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 64 resolved cases since yesterday.

Deaths

The Health Unit announced two additional deaths from COVID-19 today bringing the local death toll to 409. Health Unit CEO Theresa Marentette says a man in his 40s and a man in his 60s, both from the community, passed away.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 18 hospitalizations today: 13 people in acute care (increase of 12 today), and 5 people in the ICU with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.

Dr. Wajid Ahmed, Medical Officer of Health says the Health Unit is looking into whether or not the increase in hospitalizations may have been transfers from other regions.
