The province of Ontario announced Tuesday they’re planning to accelerate the rollout of COVID-19 vaccinations to long-term care homes in priority regions of the province, including Windsor Essex.

Officials say the plan will ensure that all residents, health care workers and essential caregivers at long-term care homes in the region receive a COVID-19 vaccination by January 21st.

“We are getting the vaccine to those who need it most as quickly as possible,” said General Rick Hillier (retired), in a news release. “Our focus is on getting the vaccines to the most vulnerable, as well as to the outstanding men and women who serve and care for our long-term care residents.”

The province says nearly 3,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine were administered at 24 long-term care homes across the province between December 31st and January 3rd, and over 4,000 doses are planned to be administered to 26 long-term care homes between January 4th and 6th.

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit also announced Tuesday they plan to administer vaccinations to long-term care and retirement homes that are currently under outbreak.
