Expansion Of Vaccine Availability

Dr. Wajid Ahmed, Medical Officer of Health for Windsor Essex says the Health Unit has developed parameters to move forward with the vaccination of residents, staff, and essential caregivers at long-term care and retirement homes that are under outbreak.

Dr. Ahmed says vaccines can now be offered to:

Residents

    • individuals with no contra-indications to any of the available vaccines
    • residents that are negative in affected units in homes under outbreak
    • residents in non-affected units in homes under outbreak
    • previously positive COVID-19 cases that are considered resolved

Staff

    • staff who are negative and have never worked in affected units in homes under outbreak
    • staff who are negative but who are not identified as high risk close contacts of a confirmed COVID-19 case
    • staff who are on a leave of absence due to outbreak concerns but who are planning to return to work immediately after vaccination and supported by their employer
    • any previously positive COVID-19 staff cases who are considered resolved (but consideration can be to defer their vaccine for 3 months post-resolution when there is a vaccine supply concern)

Caregivers

    • caregivers who are negative and are not identified as high-risk close contacts of a confirmed COVID-19 case

But he says there are specific circumstances where people in these groups should not receive a vaccine at this time:

  • anyone with acute febrile illness or severe acute infection
  • anyone with an active COVID-19 case
  • anyone who failed the active COVID-19 screen on the day of vaccination
  • anyone who is suspected of COVID-19 at this time
