The Windsor Essex County Health Unit has completed the first round of COVID-19 vaccinations at all local long-term care homes, well ahead of schedule.
Health Unit CEO Theresa Marentette says the Health Unit finished administering the first doses to residents, staff and essential caregivers at all nineteen long-term care homes in Windsor and Essex County. She says the Health Unit will be circling back to homes in case anyone did not get their first dose.
“Our Health Unit staff at every level contributed to the successful rollout,” she said. “We’re very happy about that.”
Dr. Wajid Ahmed, Medical Officer of Health for Windsor Essex says the Health Unit finished the vaccinations on Sunday January 10th, well ahead of the province’s goal of having long-term care homes vaccinated by January 25th.
He says Windsor Essex is the first health unit region in the province to complete vaccinations of residents, staff and essential caregivers at long-term care homes.
Dr. Ahmed noted those vaccinated will need to wait ten to fourteen days for initial immunity to develop. He says clinical trial data shows the vaccine will be more effective after people receive their second dose. Marentette says long-term care residents, staff and essential caregivers will be receiving their second doses in a few weeks.
She says the Health Unit is starting vaccinations at retirement homes today.
