Windsor Regional Hospital will be one of seventeen hospitals in Ontario to begin receiving doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine in the next two weeks, the province announced Friday.

Hospital officials say Windsor Regional will receive a “limited supply” of the vaccines but the exact number or the exact date for delivery is not yet known.

They say first group the Ontario government is focusing on vaccinating are employees who work at long term care and retirement Homes that are not in outbreak in Grey (lockdown) and red (control) regions in the province, including Windsor and-Essex.

The hospital says individual employees from those facilities will be independently scheduled for inoculation. The Pfizer vaccine requires individuals to receive two doses.

The Pfizer vaccine requires individuals being inoculated to visit the site of the vaccine since movement of the vaccine is not allowed from its initial delivery site and due to a need for the vaccine to be stored in freezers at -80 degree Celsius.

Windsor Regional says as more doses are received, the following groups will be prioritized for the vaccine:

  • Residents, staff, essential caregivers, and other employees of congregate living settings (e.g., long-term care homes and retirement homes) that provide care for seniors as they are at higher risk of infection and serious illness from COVID-19;
  • Health care workers, including hospital employees, other staff who work or study in hospitals, and other health care personnel;
  • Adults in Indigenous communities, including remote communities where risk of transmission is high; and
  • Adult recipients of chronic home health care.

Windsor Essex joins the following other hospital sites in receiving vaccines in the coming weeks:

  • London Health Sciences Centre
  • Grand River Hospital
  • Halton Healthcare
  • Hamilton Health Sciences
  • William Osler Health System
  • Trillium Health Partners
  • Southlake Regional Health Centre
  • Mackenzie Health
  • Humber River Hospital
  • Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre
  • Toronto East Health Network
  • Unity Health Toronto
  • Scarborough Health Network
  • Lakeridge Health
  • Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre
  • Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre

To date, the province has administered over 2,300 doses of the vaccine in Toronto and Ottawa. The province is expecting to receive up to 90,000 dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine before the end of the year.
