A portion of the main road into Point Pelee National Park will be closed Wednesday and Thursday of this week for construction south of the Marsh Boardwalk.
This work is part of a larger federal infrastructure road renewal project which will result in much-needed repairs and re-surfacing of a 7 km stretch of the main road running from the park gate to the Visitor Centre.
The entire main road infrastructure project involves the underground installation of electrical and phone lines to minimize impact of utility corridors through important forest and coastal savannah habitat; upgrading sewage treatment to protect the park’s wetland ecosystems; and, repaving the 7-kilometre main road, which runs from the park’s entrance to the Visitor Centre. These improvements will benefit species at risk and the park’s natural habitat, improve water quality, and significantly decrease long-term maintenance costs.
The project began in late January and the full project is expected to be completed by late fall of this year.
