The Town of Amherstburg is one step closer to a final design of the former Duffy’s Motor Inn property.
A preferred design prepared by Landmark Engineers Inc includes a significant open plaza area, a performance area/amphitheatre, shoreline improvements, angled on-road parking along Dalhousie Street, transient marina and supporting amenities and a marina breakwater/fishing pier.
During the design process, two public open houses were held.
“While the public commentary received was generally positive, a large contingent of comments requested that a boat ramp be included as part of the project,” notes the report to the town council.
The boat ramp option was then studied, but was concluded it would problematic as overflow parking associated with the boat ramp would cause significant adverse impacts to the downtown area; and for a boat ramp to be designed into the site, the majority of the site itself would be taken up for parking to accommodate tow vehicle/trailer combinations.
Total estimated costs sit around $7 million and $9 million, and the project may be completed in phases.
Town council will vote on the recommendations at a special meeting on May 6th.
