A species of mosquito known to carry the Zika virus has been found in a West Nile mosquito trap in Windsor-Essex.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit says Aedes albopictus mosquitos, also known as Asian tiger mosquitos, were found in a local trap during routine monitoring and surveillance for West Nile virus.

They say the species has the potential to transmit Zika virus to humans.

However all of the Aedes albopictus mosquitos found locally tested negative for Zika virus.

The Health Unit plans to release more information Thursday morning.
