Windsor Police are warning the public about deactivated cellphones after 911 dispatchers received over 40 calls on Sunday by children playing with a deactivated smartphone.

Police say many deactivated cellphones still have the ability to call 911.

“Please be mindful when giving children old smart phones and cell phones that they may still be able to call 911 and teach them to only do this in an emergency,” says Windsor Police spokesperson Constable Andrew Drouillard. “Incidents like this could potentially delay a 911 call with someone calling to report an emergency.”
