Windsor City Council has approved changes to the city smoking by-law.
The changes approved Monday evening will prohibit smoking at parks, beaches, trails, bus shelters, boat ramps/marinas, recreation centers, conservation areas, and community gardens, except in designated smoking areas.
A number of city Councillors expressed concerns that the new by-law did now allow for designated smoking areas, but Health Unit officials told council that a lot of times having designated smoking areas lead to people ignoring smoking bans. They also said having smoking areas sends the wrong message to the public.
After over an hour of debate, council voted to ban smoking on all municipal properties, and for the approval of a designated smoking area to be set up at the WFCU Centre and for temporary ones to be approved in other locations on an event basis.
No date for this to begin has been set. Administration will come back to council with a future report.
