The Windsor Detroit tunnel will renovated later this year as part of $50 million in ongoing work over the past 18 years, officials announced Wednesday.
The scheduled renovations will include removal and replacement of the tunnel ceiling, as well as electrical, communications, lighting and masonry work.
The project, under the direction of Parsons Brinckerhoff Engineering, is funded by Detroit Windsor Tunnel, LLC and the Windsor Detroit Tunnel Corporation. The renovations to the tunnel come on the heels of the Windsor plaza renovations that were completed by the Province of Ontario in 2015.
“The City of Windsor is committed to investing in our infrastructure assets, and we are especially pleased to be part of the continuing enhancements and renovations at the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel,” said Mayor Drew Dilkens. “These newly announced renovations, on top of the recent revitalization of the tunnel plaza, will only serve to further enhance that reputation.”
Detroit Windsor Tunnel president Neal Belitsky said the tunnel will continue to serve as the premier gateway to Windsor and Detroit for years to come.
“This renovation project is a continuation of the over $50 million in investments we’ve made in the tunnel since 1998 to continue maintaining and improving this great asset,” he said.
The Detroit Windsor Tunnel will work with local media, tourism and business associations, government entities, and through direct communications to commuters to make sure they are informed of any construction updates.
