This Saturday will be the coldest night of the year.

The Coldest Night of the Year, is a 5 & 10km fundraising walk that supports local charities that serve the hungry, homeless and hurting in more then 20 cities across Canada.

The walk provides walkers the opportunity to experience a hint of the challenge faced by those experiencing homelessness by walking for a few hours during a cold Canadian winter’s night.

In Windsor, walkers will be walking for the Downtown Mission.

The event’s timing is no coincidence — walking in February is particularly helpful because volunteerism and contributions are at a peak around the Christmas holiday season and slow significantly afterwards, so that by February — the coldest month of the year — resources have dwindled. It’s the perfect time to come together to restock the balance sheet while refocusing on the needs in our communities as winter wears on.

The Coldest Night of the Year begins with registration at 4pm and participants will be released around 5pm. The event will conclude with a warm, light snack to celebrate the effort of all walkers and volunteers

The local goal is to raise $25,000, and has already beat its goal.
