UPDATE: Investigators have determined that the fire was arson and it caused $250,000 in damage.
Firefighters have extinguished a fire inside a materials storage building in the 1100 block of Westcott Street on the City’s east side.
Fire broke out after 11pm Thursday night and crews reported smoke drifting from the roof and a sliding door upon arrival to the scene.
Firefighters were able to knock down the flames with only one hose but thick smoke persisted in the building. Ventilation fans were set up to remove smoke as onlookers gathered and a VIA Rail train passed by on the adjacent tracks.
At this time reports indicate that it appears tar and other materials were what was was burning inside the building. An investigator has been called to the scene. Nobody was working at the building at the time the fire started.
