The Ottawa Street Business Improvement Association is looking for City Council approval to undertake a unique concept called a “Paint the Pavement Program”.

The concept, which originated in Portland Oregon, essentially allows the community to come together to paint murals in the centres of a street’s intersections. The concept, says Ottawa Street BIA President Arnie Blaine in a report to City Council, will promote community building, provide traffic calming, act as a unique neighbourhood identifyer and in the case of Portland, aid in crime prevention.

The program would allow local residents and students from local students to participate. The street would be painted with traffic grade paint and would be touched up yearly.

City Council is set to hear a proposal to repair Ottawa Street tonight and may consider the possibility of permitting this project to proceed.
