Money Headed Toward New ‘Specific’ City-Wide Projects in 2011

The City of Windsor passed a $122,782,000 budget for 2011 last night, but at the end of the night, some interesting “specific” add-ons were made to the city’s plans for this year.

These add-ons, suggested by City Councillors, are “placeholders [that are] subject to a report back [to council],” as described by Mayor Eddie Francis.

Here are the highlights:

$2m for City Hall

Repair to boilers, leaks in Council Chambers, asbestos removal, Air Conditioning system

$1.76m for Wyandotte Street West

New sewers, sidewalk and street for University of Windsor corridor, Sunset to Campbell

$500k Ottawa Street BIA

To repair roadway, crosswalks, curbs

$1m for Roseland

Repairs to golf bunkers

$200k for 6th Concession

Road work

$250k for Ducharme

Road work

$275k for Sidewalks

Sidewalks in South Windsor (along Dominion)

$150k for Downtown Market

Funding toward finding the Downtown Market a permanent home

$100k for Children’s Safety Village

Upgrades to the Children’s Safety Village

$70k for Sandwich

Street furniture

$85k for a Secret Matter

Described as a “Property Matter” relating to an in-camera (behind closed doors) Council meeting

$100k to Waive Fees for Patios

Permits will still be necessary, but sidewalk patio fees will be waived for 2011 to encourage use

$100k for Alley Rehab

To be applied to alleys “rated” in worst shape

The City identified a total of $6.59 million in “placeholders”, and Francis suggested ways to cover these costs.  Six million dollars was earned by the sale of Brighton Beach to the DRIC project, and the remaining $590,000 will be covered by what Francis described as a “decrease in $14m in reserves that we’re going to contribute to in the subsequent years.”  Therefore, costs for these additional projects are fully covered.
