Pathway to Potential, Food Matters, United Way/Centraide Windsor-Essex County, and the Downtown Farmers’ Market have partnered together to launch of a downtown farmers’ Market Dollar program.
Distributed by the City of Windsor’s social services department, this project offers families with access to the downtown core that struggle with food security printed Market Dollars equivalent to a monetary value of $20.
The Downtown Windsor Farmers’ Market was selected for the pilot project because its central location is accessible. Steve Green, the local garden collective coordinator, runs the Downtown Windsor Farmers’ Market and was happy to be involved.
Common in other communities, market voucher programs aim to provide lower income families or individuals with opportunities to purchase nutritious food while promoting and supporting local producers and markets. Over the nine months leading up to the launch, the project partners have conducted research and conferred with other communities around the province to develop a pilot market voucher project for Windsor-Essex.
The partners hope to use the results of the pilot project study to develop a sustainability plan that would allow the initiative to expand across Windsor-Essex farmers’ markets next summer.
