A committee to examine the safety and integrity of certain girders used on the Herb Gray Parkway has concluded that the girders are not “safe and durable”.
Concerns were raised in July by Glen Murray, Minister of Transportation and Minister of Infrastructure and in August the new North Talbot Road bridge was closed.
Three-hundred of the 500 girders produced with “tack” welds were installed at various spots on the Parkway project.
The committee concluded that “existing non-compliant girders may be salvaged” through a process that will involve strengthening them, and any unsafe girders will be completely removed and replaced.
Murray concluded “the government’s Chief Engineer has recommended the government proceed to implement [the recommendations]. I have accepted that recommendation.”
