Speeding In Construction Zones? Fines May Soon Be Doubled (When Workers Present)

The City of Windsor’s Operations Department is recommending doubling speeding fines in construction zones where workers are present.

City Administrators have prepared a report that proposes changing local bylaws and adding “speed fines doubled when workers present” signs to areas where road construction is taking place.

The City says the Ontario Highway Traffic Act was amended in 2006 to allow for increased fines in construction zones where workers are present, but only if municipal laws are changed to allow for a city administrator to formally designate roads as “construction zones”. Under the new bylaw, construction companies will add signage that says speeding fines are doubled between “Construction Zone Begins” and “Construction Zone Ends” signs.

The City says safety continues to be an issue for road construction crews and speeding and aggressive driving within work zones “creates risks for both workers and the travelling public”.
