July-like temperatures will continue in Windsor until at least the weekend, and flowers are growing steadily and blooming at City of Windsor parks.

At Jackson Park, the unusually warm winter prevented the ground from freezing this year and with a scarcity of nut trees in the park and the inviting aroma of deliciously delicate tulips, squirrels ate over 10,000 tulip bulbs.

The horticultural staff in Parks and Recreation discovered the devastation this month when they toured the Queen Elizabeth II Gardens preparing for the spring clean up.

“Squirrels love tulip bulbs,” explained Dave Tootill, supervisor of horticulture in the City of Windsor. “We use blood meal to prevent the squirrels from digging in the gardens until the ground freezes.” With no freeze and the blood meal composting in the gardens, the squirrels enjoyed months of free food.

Elsewhere in the park, daffodils are blooming and star magnolia trees are prepared to flower (star magnolia trees are often mistaken for cherry blossoms).
