Health Unit COVID-19 Cases & Outbreaks Update From The Weekend

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 201 new high risk cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County from over the weekend. The Health Unit does not report case counts and statistics on weekends but provides a weekend summary. Testing is still limited to high risk individuals only the province estimates actual COVID-19 cases are around 10 times higher than what is being reported.
Total Cases & Active Cases
Of these 201 new high risk cases:
- 79 were reported on March 19th
- 74 were reported on March 20th
- 48 were reported on March 21st
Total overall cases increased from 38,863 on Friday, March 18th to 39,065 on Monday, March 21st.
There are 228 cases of COVID-19 currently active in Windsor-Essex (decrease of 66 active cases since Friday).
Vaccinations
Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex).
- 356,094 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+79 since Friday)
- 343,169 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+290 since Friday)
- 191,652 people have received a 3rd dose/booster shot of a vaccine (+431 since Friday)
Vaccination Percentages
- 86.3 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 5+) have received at least one dose of a vaccine (increase of 0.1 per cent since Friday)
- 83.2 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 5+) are fully vaccinated (increase of 0.1 per cent since Friday)
- 50.5 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 18+) have received a 3rd dose/booster (decrease of 3.5 per cent since Friday)

There have been no additional deaths from COVID-19 and the local death toll stands at 589.

The Health Unit lists 24 hospitalizations today (decrease of 4), and 2 of those hospitalizations are in the ICU.

Hospital Outbreaks
- Windsor Regional Hospital – Ouellette – 8E (new outbreak)
- Under outbreak since March 17th, 2022
- Windsor Regional officials said in a news release that a visitor visited a patient in the hospital and removed their mask while with them. The visitor later tested positive for COVID-19 and unfortunately passed on the infection to two patients in the same room, leading to an outbreak declaration for the 8 East floor at the Ouellette Campus.
