Health Unit COVID-19 Cases & Outbreaks Update For Thursday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 105 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Thursday.

Please note: The Health Unit says their offices will be closed for the holidays. Their next cases and outbreaks update will be on Wednesday, December 29th.

New & Total Cases

The Health Unit says 36 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 23 cases are community acquired, 3 cases are outbreak related, 3 cases are travel related, and the acquisition sources of 40 cases are still under investigation.

Total overall cases increased from 23,608 on Wednesday December 22nd to 23,713 on Thursday December 23rd.

There are 547 cases of COVID-19 currently active in Windsor-Essex (increase of 7 since yesterday).

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 343,267 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+377 since yesterday)
    • 21,092 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (+86 since yesterday)
    • 322,175 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+291 since yesterday)
    • 93,186 people have received a 3rd dose/booster shot of a vaccine (+6,668 since yesterday)
  • A total of 758,628 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+7,336 since yesterday)

Vaccination Percentages

  • 78.3 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine (increase of 0.1 per cent since yesterday)
    • 83.2 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 5+) have received at least one dose of a vaccine (increase of 0.1 per cent since yesterday)
  • 73.5 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated (increase of 0.1 per cent since yesterday)
    • 78.0 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 5+) are fully vaccinated (increase of < 0.1 per cent since yesterday)
  • 21.2 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received a 3rd dose/booster shot of a vaccine (increase of 1.5 per cent since yesterday)

Note: The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County presently.

The Health Unit lists 22,678 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 97 resolved cases since yesterday.

Deaths

The Health Unit announced one additional death from COVID-19 bringing the local death toll to 488. They say a man in his 70s from the community passed away.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 27 hospitalizations today: 16 people in acute care (decrease of 11), and 11 people in the ICU with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
