The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 1 new case of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Wednesday.
New Cases
The Health Unit says 1 new case is reported for Wednesday but the net change to the total is a decrease of 2 cases due to another data cleanup. Their method for reducing the total due to data cleanups involves reducing the current day’s recorded new case count.
Total cases decreased from 16,834 on Tuesday July 6th to 16,832 on Wednesday July 7th due to the cleanup, and 28 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex.
They say the acquisition source of the one new case is still under investigation.
Variants of Concern
The Health Unit says 1,975 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (increase of 2).
Variant case strains:
- 1,812 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7)
- 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
- 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1)
- 3 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2)
- 1 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1)
The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain.
They say 8 variants of concern cases are currently active in Windsor-Essex.
Vaccinations
Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):
- 276,078 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+510 since yesterday)
- 90,034 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-5,200 since yesterday) *
- 186,044 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+5,710 since yesterday)
- A total of 462,122 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+6,220 since yesterday)
* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses
Vaccination Percentages
- 63.03 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
- 74.8 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (adults) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
- 42.47 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated
- 52.7 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (adults) are fully vaccinated
Note: The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

The Health Unit lists 16,369 total resolved cases.
That’s an increase of 4 resolved case since yesterday.
Deaths
There have been no additional deaths from COVID-19 and the local death toll stands at 435.
Hospitalizations
The Health Unit lists 11 hospitalizations of people from Windsor-Essex today: 10 people in acute care (decrease of 3), and 1 person in the ICU with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
