Chief Nursing Officer and CEO Theresa Marentette of the Health Unit will retire on June 30th, 2021.

Marentette started her nursing career at the Salvation Army Grace Hospital before joining the WECHU as a public health nurse in 1989. From then, Marentette moved progressively to management leading several departments, including school health, infectious disease and oral health, until she was appointed Director of Health Protection and Chief Nursing Officer in 2013.

In 2017, Theresa took over the helm of the WECHU as Chief Executive Officer and Chief Nursing Officer.

“The WECHU has been my home for a large part of my life. I feel privileged and honoured to have been able to do the work I love each day while serving my community. This past year has been one of the most challenging years of my career as a nurse and a leader. With the vaccine implementation well underway, and a strong leadership team in place, it feels like the right time to start a new chapter”, says Theresa Marentette.

Marentette has been front and centre of the pandemic with Dr. Wajid Ahmed since last March doing daily updates on YouTube.

“Theresa has worked non-stop for our community. She has supported our staff, our management team and myself through its most difficult times. Theresa’s focus and commitment has never wavered; her leadership in public health will be missed”, said Dr. Ahmed, Medical Officer of Health.

The Board of Health will be to begin the process of transitioning the health unit under new leadership.
