The Windsor Essex County Health Unit will be making wearing a mask mandatory in Windsor Essex while visiting commercial establishments.
Dr. Wajid Ahmed, Medical Officer of Health for Windsor Essex says the mandatory mask policy will begin “next week” but an exact date is still being worked out.
“Starting next week there will be a mandatory mask policy in all commercial establishments in Windsor Essex,” he said. “Having a mandatory mask policy at all commercial establishments will make it everyone’s responsibility to play their part in reducing transmission.”
Dr. Ahmed says the regulations are still being worked on, but he anticipates businesses will be able to deny service to people not wearing a mask and employees will also need to wear masks. He says the types of businesses are still being worked on, and those details will be provided soon.
He says there will likely be exceptions for people of certain ages and with certain medical conditions, and those exceptions will be detailed next week.
Dr. Ahmed says the mandatory mask policy is being created to “help us feel more confident about our COVID-19 containment and will help us move further in the right direction toward Stage 2 Reopening.”
He says masks do not replace the need for physical distancing and they do not protect the wearer, but he says they do protect others from the person wearing the mask.
Dr. Ahmed said the only other health unit in Ontario that has implemented a mandatory mask policy has been Guelph.
