19 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Windsor Essex As Of Friday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit has confirmed 19 new cases of COVID-19 as of Friday, bringing the local total to 1,263. They say 721 people locally have recovered.

Cases increased from 1,244 on Thursday June 18th to 1,263 on Friday June 19th.

The Health Unit says 17 cases are workers in the agri-farm industry, and 2 people are household contacts of a case.

There have been no additional deaths due to COVID-19 as of Friday and the local death toll stands at 67.

The Health Unit says two long-term care homes, Village of Aspen Lake and Country Village Homes are still under outbreak.

The Health Unit has started listing the number of workplaces that have outbreaks where two or more workers have tested positive for COVID-19 “within a reasonable timeline to suspect transmission in the workplace.” As of Friday, 8 workplaces have 2 or more cases (3 in Kingsville, 5 in Leamington).

Mandatory Mask Policy

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit has announced it will be mandatory to wear a mask in any commercial establishment in Windsor Essex as of next week. They say more details will be released soon.

“Starting next week there will be a mandatory mask policy in all commercial establishments in Windsor Essex,” Dr. Ahmed said. “Having a mandatory mask policy at all commercial establishments will make it everyone’s responsibility to play their part in reducing transmission.”

Dr. Ahmed says Windsor-Essex has continued to seen a large number of cases this week, with most cases in the agri-farm sector; the primary source of exposure is through close contact with confirmed cases; hospitalizations and ICU capacity are “within expected thresholds”; random testing has yielded “very few positives”; and the current rate of transmission (R0) has decreased to below one “signalling a decrease in the spread of COVID-19.”

Dr. Ahmed says the blue line looks at the number of cases reported as a 7-day moving average. The green line looks at the same details without workers in the agri-farm sector.
