The Windsor Essex County Health Unit has confirmed the area’s sixth positive case of COVID-19 and the first case to require hospitalization in the area.

Officials say the the case is a female in her sixties with recent travel out of country. They say she developed symptoms on March 18th, went to the COVID-19 Assessment Centre on March 23rd, and was admitted to Windsor Regional Hospital on March 24th where she remains under hospital care.

“The necessary precautions were taken since the patient first came to hospital,” says Windsor Regional Hospital President and CEO David Musyj. “The patient is being cared for by our amazing and capable team members and we are taking all the necessary steps to protect this patient, our staff and our other patients at Windsor Regional Hospital.”

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit is currently following up with her close contacts.

“The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit is continuing to investigate and monitor all individuals who are at risk of exposure,” says Dr. Wajid Ahmed, Medical Officer of Health. “As we continue to see cases rise in our area and in the United States this sixth case is a reminder to be vigilant, stay home, and self-isolate if you have travelled, including distancing yourself from family.”

You’re asked to immediately self-isolate and contact the Windsor-Essex Public Health Unit at 519-258-2146 ext. 1420 if you have fever, cough, or breathing difficulty AND any of the following:

  • You have travelled outside of Canada in the 14 days before onset of illness;
    Or
