Although it’s taken them awhile to come back, the undead are slowly rising from their graves.
After a one year hiatus, Windsor’s zombie walk is making their return to the city. Partnering with Scarehouse Windsor (located at 1441 Mcdougall Avenue,) the frightful festivities are set to take place on Saturday, October 19.
Absorbing all costs of the event, the attraction’s co-owner Shawn Lippert felt it made sense.
“I knew that it didn’t happen last year and that it was a great event,” he said. “I helped out in 2012 and had a blast. I decided to reach out and the organizers were very inviting. They were planning on running the event for 2019 and I offered everything that I could provide.”
This includes things like logistical planning, covering city permits, organizational meetings and perks for those registering on Zombie Walk’s website. Those who do so and dress the part will gain entry to both haunts at the facility for the price of one that night.
Anyone taking part should gather at Scarehouse Windsor’s parking lot between 5:30pm and 7pm. From there, the group will move south down Windsor Street to Jackson Park. After arriving, a designated route leads guests through the area — including a spot where invited amateur and professional photographers are set to take pictures of the undead masses.
Once finished, everyone will then return north to Scarehouse Windsor where a best zombie award is handed out by organizers at the event concourse.
Although coming in your best undead wear is recommended, people can still attend naked (meaning not as a zombie) on the sidelines: Participants will be in plain view throughout the route and back at Scarehouse Windsor.
While the all-ages event is free, organizers are asking those participating for a small donation however.
“This event is special to us,” said Zombie coordinator Micheal Reeve in the event press release. “All zombies are encouraged to bring canned and dry goods donations for the Windsor Downtown Mission and Windsor Youth Center.”
Organized to help benefit the community, it’s something both groups are hoping to continue.
“We just wanted to make sure that we got this year’s event off and running,” said Lippert. “We can now plan for the future and would like this event to become one of the key events for the Halloween season. Scarehouse Windsor has the space and experience to help Windsor Zombie Walk become more than just a ‘walk in the park.’ We would love it to be on a festival size with multiple events happening over the weekend. But never lose site that this is about the walk and the charitable aspect of stocking those shelves for the winter months.”
