For the second time in less than a month a pilot flying a small plane spotted a drone flying in controlled airspace near Windsor Airport.
The pilot of a single-engine Diamond DA 20-C1 propeller plane owned by a local flying school was heading in to land at Windsor Airport just before 7pm on Monday, June 3rd when he reported passing a drone on approach to the airport.
In a report filed by NAV CANADA, the pilot told the control tower the drone was approximately one to two feet in diameter, was white in colour, and was hovering at an altitude of 1000 feet near the solar panels southeast of Runway 25.
The incident comes after a similar circumstance where a pilot reported a white drone hovering over a runway at 1000 feet on May 11th.
Transport Canada has listed both incidents as unauthorized entry into controlled airspace.
Canadian drone laws prohibit the use of drones 250g to 25kg in weight within 5.6 kilometres of airports. Drone pilots are also not permitted to fly higher than 400 feet above the ground.
Transport Canada inspectors investigate reports of unsafe and illegal drone use and may involve local police if other laws, for example, the Criminal Code and privacy laws, have been broken.
Drone pilots can face penalties including up to $25,000 in fines and/or jail time, if they put aircraft at risk, fly where they are not allowed, and/or endanger anyone’s safety.
The plane landed safely.
The investigation is continuing.
