Excavation near the Howard Avenue / CP Rail interchange

Windsorites are looking at only having to wait one more year until Howard Avenue is congestion-free.

Construction crews are working around the clock on a massive grade separation at Howard Avenue and the Canadian Pacific Railway tracks.

Work started in July on a the project to build a rail bridge and car underpass similar to the Walker / CP Rail underpass.

During the summer, work crews demolished many familiar buildings in the area, including Dayus Roofing, Ferguson Glass, Ziebart Tidy Car, Bedroom Depot and portions of Part Source to make way for a $2.4 million detour road.

Traffic on Howard is now routed around the construction site seamlessly.

In approximately a year from now, Howard at the tracks will look like this!  Sloped grassy barriers on either side of the underpass’ roadway will be landscaped with trees, shrubs and flower gardens (a major improvement on the concrete retaining walls at the Walker Underpass).

Traffic on Howard will flow smoothly under the new rail bridge, and will be no longer tied up by US-bound freight trains.  Windsor’s familiar arc lampposts will dot a new Memorial Drive – Howard connection.

The $29.6 million project is being paid for by a joint funding from the Federal and Ontario Governments under a special program called the Border Infrastructure Fund, which was announced in 2004.

Howard is expected to reopen sometime in late 2010 / early 2011.
