Flood Watch Issued

The Essex Region Conservation Authority has issued a flood watch.

They say that due to the existing wet/semi-frozen ground conditions in the Essex Region and current forecasts advising of the potential for 10 mm to 40 mm of precipitation over the next 18 hour period, the potential for flooding exists throughout the region especially in low-lying areas adjacent to and within floodplain areas on all major waterways.

In addition, this system also has the potential to have high intensity isolated thunderstorms which may enhance the possibility of flooding and drainage problems throughout the entire region, especially in urban areas, in the specific locations affected by these potential downpours.

Predicted forecasts are also calling for the possibility of high winds with peak southerly wind gusts between 65 to 80 km/hr. These winds have the potential to cause flooding, shoreline erosion, damaging waves and ice buildup along the Lake Erie shoreline within the municipalities of Amherstburg, Essex, Kingsville, Leamington and the south shore of Pelee Island.

Flowing water and standing water can be extremely hazardous. People, pets and livestock should be kept away from areas of flowing and standing water.

If possible, property owners should consider inspecting areas of their properties for catch basin locations and other surface water inlets and make these areas free of debris.
