Council To Decide Monday If Downtown Will See Real Ice This Winter

If the city is going to have real ice downtown this winter, city administration say it will coat $26,200 for the needed repairs to allow the operation of Charles Clark Square.

Repairs include work to the underground pipes, lighting repairs and work to the outside boards of the rink.

Back on October 29th, administration had provided to council a report on the repairs that were needed to the rink.  That evening, council decided to use the synthetic ice that was purchased in 2013 this season to eliminate the need to spend the money on repairs.

Since the meeting, parks staff have attempted to configure the synthetic ice on a flat surface at a temporary site, but have determined that the unevenness of the interlocking pieces would be a safety concern for the users and a liability to the city.

City council will be asked Monday night if they wish to spend the money to make repairs to have real ice this season.  If they don’t, then the square will sit empty.
