Hello time traveller!!
This article is 4979 days old.
The information listed below is likely outdated and has been preserved for archival purposes.

Friday night when I wasn’t downstairs being assaulted by long man-hair and dreadlocks in The Coach and Horses, I was upstairs at FM Lounge groovin’ to the tunes of some local rock bands.

Starting it all off was Weirdonia, a guitar and drum duo with an eclectic style with very punk influences and a garage band-style sound. Their playing might not always have been the tightest, and they did make some mistakes, but the boys themselves admit that they’re more than willing to sacrifice perfection for the sake of a good time. A great attitude to have when it comes to performing, and one that certainly suits their style of music and performance. With song titles like “Nymphochondriac” and what appears to be a seizuring guitar player for the majority of the set, Weirdonia are worth checking out.

Coming off of a great set opening for Anonymous Bosch a couple weeks back, Silver Glory did a spectacular job last night. Not that I disliked them previously, but after last night’s performance my fandom for these guys was solidified. They’re all great musicians and go wonderful jobs covering songs by the likes of Pink Floyd and Rush, and their  originals are great too, showing off a talent for writing and playing, as well as a passion for performing. I definitely look forward to seeing more of these guys and hearing more original material.

Formed of what used to be Focal Point and Ictus, we now have SixtyFirstSecond, an alternative rock band that’s been kicking around the scene for a few years now. Characterized by catchy riffs and lyrics, their recordings are polished and their live performances are tight. They have the flavour that I keep seeing in local alternative bands that I think is brought on by the tone of music played on the immensely popular 89X radio station. But even with that, they still manage to shine through with something a bit different and hard to put a finger on, something I believe is a large contributing factor to their appeal. I’d suggest that you try to pick up a copy of their EP An Introduction to Insight”, it might help to explain what I mean. And definitely try to catch their next show.

Already having been mentioned in my articles numerous times before, Awake to a Dream likely doesn’t need much introduction. They’re blues, alternative rock, and experimental thrown in a blender and stored in a hot garage in 1993. Songs they cover become their own, and songs of their own are distinctive and fun.  I had an especially good time rocking out to their version of “S(hr)ubdivisions”. Last night was probably one of the best shows I’ve seen them do, and that success is do in part to the wonderful soundman Jay Zeman, high five to him.

There are a few more photos from this show available for your viewing pleasure here.
