As we search for and attempt to maintain renewable energy sources, St. Clair College is training individuals to work in the sustainable energy field.

This two-year diploma program trains students to become a Sustainable Energy Technician, working in the energy field. It is offered only at the Thames Campus in Chatham. Upon graduation, students will be able to work in a variety of occupational settings from consulting firms, heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration industries.

“[Students will be] working with companies installing geothermal systems, solar system, wind systems,” said Mark Benoit, Chair, School of Academic Studies, Thames Campus. “Students learn about solar, wind, geothermal and biomass. Students have hands on practical experience coupled with theory.”

Benoit said there is also a growing demand for trained individuals in the energy field at this time.

According to the St. Clair College website, the Sustainable Energy Technician program, students will be taught how to “integrate renewable electrical and thermal systems with current existing energy sources.” Students will also learn about green building concepts and understand photovoltaic and wind turbine generating systems, solar thermal and geothermal biomass systems giving them the ability to work in the field partaking in sales marketing or installation and maintenance of these types of technologies.

Benoit said students who wish to enter this field should be “physically fit, have a math background, enjoy working outside and learning new technology.”

The program is still accepting applicants. Anyone who is interested in applying to this program should visit St. Clair College’s registrars office immediately to ensure their spot for September.
