Health Unit COVID-19 Cases & Outbreaks Update From The New Year’s Break

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 1,869 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County from the holiday break.

The Health Unit has not reported cases and outbreak data since Thursday December 30th due to the New Year’s holiday.

New & Total Cases

Of the 1,869 new cases:

  • 352 cases were reported on December 31st
  • 322 cases were reported on January 1st
  • 287 cases were reported on January 2nd
  • 578 cases were reported on January 3rd
  • 330 cases were reported on January 4th

The Health Unit says 194 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 137 cases are community acquired, 5 cases are outbreak related, 12 cases are travel related, and the acquisition sources of 1,521 cases are still under investigation.

Total overall cases increased from 24,953 on Thursday December 30th to 26,822 on Tuesday January 4th.

There are 2,289 cases of COVID-19 currently active in Windsor-Essex (increase of 1,065 cases since Thursday).

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 358,879 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+811 since Thursday)
    • 24,988 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (+117 since Thursday)
    • 333,891 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+694 since Thursday)
    • 127,786 people have received a 3rd dose/booster shot of a vaccine (+9,526 since Thursday)
  • A total of 820,556 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+11,031 since Thursday)

Vaccination Percentages

  • 81.9 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine (increase of 0.2 per cent since Thursday)
    • 86.9 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 5+) have received at least one dose of a vaccine (increase of 0.2 per cent since Thursday)
  • 76.2 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated (increase of 0.2 per cent since Thursday)
    • 80.9 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 5+) are fully vaccinated (increase 0.2 per cent since Thursday)
  • 29.1 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received a 3rd dose/booster shot of a vaccine (increase of 2.2 per cent since Thursday)

Note: The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County presently.

Resolved Cases

The Health Unit lists 24,038 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 804 resolved cases since Thursday.

Deaths

There have been no additional deaths from COVID-19 and the local death toll stands at 495.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 38 hospitalizations today: 33 people in acute care (increase of 22), and 5 people in the ICU (decrease of 2) with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
