Windsor Fire and Rescue Services has received a grant from CP Rail to support its Hazmat Team.
The City of Windsor says the funds will provide operations and technician training for thirteen personnel. The training also allows six members of the Windsor Police Service and six members from Essex-Windsor EMS to join in the program and receive certification at various levels as part of a joint venture.
“Grant funding from CP Rail has allowed WFRS added opportunities to train personnel and make equipment purchases,” said Deputy Fire Chief of Operations James Waffle.
The City says Windsor Fire is one of six provincially qualified hazmat teams and one of only three teams that include CBRNE (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive) capabilities. The team is equipped to service the nearly half a million citizens of Windsor and Essex County, as well as provide support for any large-scale response needed throughout the province.
“We’re thankful for CP Rail and their continued support,” said Waffle. “We look forward to continuing to work with them, and we’re hopeful to be able to deploy our personnel to the CP Rail training facilities located in the USA in the future. In the past this training has been very beneficial to enhance and upgrade WFRS hazmat skills and emergency response preparedness as it relates to rail emergencies.”
